Samsung Galaxy S24 Series: A Bold Leap into AI-Powered Innovation
In a dazzling showcase at an event in California, Samsung unveiled its latest premium Android phones, the Galaxy S24 ultra, signaling a strategic shift towards AI-driven features. Leading this innovation is the titanium-clad “Ultra” model, boasting Qualcomm’s cutting-edge chips, vibrant displays, and formidable cameras. However, in a departure from the norm, Samsung’s focus on hardware upgrades has taken a backseat, with the spotlight on the remarkable capabilities of its new Galaxy AI brand.
The Galaxy S24 series introduces a host of AI-powered tricks, positioning Samsung in direct competition with the likes of Google’s Pixel range. The incorporation of Google’s Gemini AI models is evident in the phone’s live translate feature, facilitating real-time, two-way conversations in 13 languages across phone calls, voice, and text—a feature akin to Google Translate. The innovative “Chat Assist” goes beyond conventional spell checks, ensuring messages convey the appropriate tone.
The phone’s video and photo editing capabilities are revolutionized with generative AI technology. Users can effortlessly remove objects, backgrounds, and correct images, while the AI can generate instant slow-motion videos by adding frames to regular footage. Analysts commend Samsung’s decision to add watermarks and metadata to AI-altered content, enhancing transparency.
Ben Wood, Chief Analyst at CCS Insight, notes, “The Galaxy S24 series, alongside Google’s Pixel range, heralds the era of consumer-oriented AI in smartphones—a trend soon to be embraced by all major smartphone manufacturers, including Apple.”
In a strategic partnership, Google and Samsung introduce “Circle to Search” a novel feature set to launch on January 31 on select Android devices, including the S24 and Pixel 8 series. Users can simply circle an item on the screen while holding down the home button or gesture bar, letting Google’s AI handle the rest.
Acknowledging the need for sustainable practices, Samsung and Google commit to seven years of software support for the new phones, ensuring extended usage. The S24’s construction incorporates a wider variety and quantity of recycled materials, reflecting a commitment to reducing environmental impact.
With a nine-month window of opportunity, Samsung aims to reclaim its leadership in the premium smartphone segment, particularly in key markets like the US and China. This ambitious move precedes the highly anticipated launch of Apple’s next-gen iPhone in September. As the battle for supremacy unfolds, consumers can expect a surge in AI-powered capabilities, reshaping the landscape of smartphone innovation.
